Brasov Old Town on a Castle Day Trip
Brasov's old town in the 90 minutes a day trip gives it: Council Square, the Black Church (30 lei), Rope Street under repair, the Tampa cable car, and closures.
On a Dracula’s Castle day trip from Bucharest, Brasov is the lunch stop: most of the days carded here give its old town about 1 hour 30 minutes. That is enough for Council Square, the inside of the Black Church and a walk to Catherine’s Gate, 0.5 km on foot from end to end, but not for the Tampa cable car as well. Rope Street, the narrow lane everyone photographs, has been shut for repairs since November 2025. Zig Royal Tours srl’s From Bucharest: Dracula Castle, Peles and Brașov Day Trip is the one that turns the stop into a guided walk through the old town; it was from $28 in current promotion (usually $56) a person, checked November 2026.
The calendar above is Zig Royal Tours srl’s day from Bucharest, with 1,067 reviews (checked November 2026).
The short answer
With 90 minutes, eat first, then walk: Council Square, the inside of the Black Church, the old gate at the end of the walk and back to the coach. Leave the Tampa cable car for a night in Brasov. If you would rather have someone explain the old town than find it yourself, book a day with a guided walk there.

The old town on one map

The walk below starts in the centre of the old town, Council Square (Piata Sfatului). From there it is 0.5 km on foot past the Black Church and the end of Rope Street to Catherine’s Gate, the old town gate at the far end.
Council Square
The square at the centre of the old town, with the old City Hall in the middle and painted merchants’ houses around it, is a pedestrian square lined with restaurants, so lunch here is the quickest option. Gray Line Romania’s full day from Bucharest, for one, gives its hour of free time for lunch here.
The Black Church
The great Gothic church just off the square is the one stop with a ticket and hours to plan around. Until April 2027 it opens from Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:00, and on Sunday and Monday 12:00 to 18:00, with the last entry 20 minutes before closing. An adult ticket is 30 lei; pensioners and students pay 25 lei, pupils 20 lei, and children up to 7 go in free. The church is closed on 1 January and 25 December, and on Mondays 9 and 16 November 2026 for its autumn cleaning (bisericaneagra.ro, read 3 November 2026). On a Sunday or Monday, a group that reaches Brasov before noon finds the church still shut.

Rope Street
Rope Street is closed. Brasov shut Strada Sforii in November 2025 because plaster was coming away from the walls of the houses on either side, and in late September 2026 the city signed a contract of about 2.1 million lei, before VAT, to make it safe; the Brasov press (bizbrasov.ro, bzb.ro) reported the works as only starting. We found no reopening date. You can still look into it from either end.
Brasov City Hall gives the lane’s width as between 111 and 135 cm and calls it the narrowest street in the city; it was first recorded in the 17th century, built as a passage between two streets, and restored and lit in 2003.

The Tampa cable car
The cable car climbs Tampa, the wooded hill above the old town: 573 m of cable and 320 m of height in about 2 minutes, to an upper station at 960 m. A return ticket is 45 lei for an adult and 30 lei for a child aged 6 to 12; one way is 30 lei or 20 lei (telecabina-tampa.ro, November 2026). It runs from 10:30 from Tuesday to Sunday and from 12:30 on Mondays, until the evening, and it is shut from 16 to 18 November 2026 for maintenance. The lower station is 0.8 km on foot from Council Square, and panoramicbrasov.ro, the operator group’s site, puts the queue at busy times at about 30 minutes (read 3 November 2026). In a 90-minute stop it does not fit with lunch; stay a night in Brasov for it.
If you stay in Brasov
A night in Brasov changes the trip: Bran Castle is a short drive away, and small-group days from Brasov add the Rasnov citadel and the bear sanctuary at Zarnesti. Active Travel Day Tours’ Bran, Rasnov and Peles small-group day from Brasov takes up to 7 people, from $78 on Viator, checked November 2026. The Rasnov citadel explains what is open there.
